Ocimum basilicum
With basil meaning “royal”, the herb is one of the most commonly used herbs. The royal herb is particularly popular in the Italian kitchen, where it adds a terrific flavour to pasta dishes, chicken, sauces and dressings.

The plant originates from India and has been known in Europe since the 12th century.
